Get to Know Maria

Maria graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law and was admitted to the practice of law in June, 1998. Maria made her way through college and law school working full time during the day and attending school full time at night; utilizing employer tuition reimbursement to the maximum extent possible.  At the end of Maria’s second year of law school, she became a single mother to her only son. Maria has never taken the easy way out. Her work ethic and perseverance served her well when, as a single mother, her then two year old son was diagnosed as deaf/hard of hearing just as she was graduating from law school.

Maria’s son attended Maryland School for the Deaf for five years before attending elementary, middle and high school in Carroll County public schools.  Maria resides in Eldersburg with her now 22 year old son.  Maria has always been a strong defender of the Constitution. That being said, Maria believes the judiciary's role is not to make law and legislate from the bench.  A judge's oath is to uphold the Constitution and laws of the United States and the State of Maryland.

The majority of Maria’s career has been spent in public service, having served as a Senior Assistant State’s Attorney in Carroll County for 14 years.  Now working in the Maryland Department of Human Services, Maria’s passion lies in civil service. Maria has literally tried thousands of cases in the district and circuit courts of Carroll County. Her desire to become a judge is not borne out of an inflated ego, or a desire to hold a position of power, but rather the next logical step in her desire to serve her community in the most effective way, that maximizes her knowledge, skills and passion.

As a Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Maria supervised the Domestic Violence Unit where she prosecuted some of the most difficult cases on the docket; cases ranging from misdemeanor property crimes to homicide.  Domestic Violence cases are unique in that frequently neither the defendant, nor the victim is interested in prosecuting the case. These cases presented Maria with the unique challenge of presenting a case without the participation of the victim of the crime, and learning the delicate balance of holding an offender accountable, considering the wishes of the crime victim, and the effect on the family, all while maximizing public safety.

Maria has trained law enforcement officers from across the state at the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission and has trained prosecutors from across the country at the National District Attorney's Association National Advocacy Center.

As a member of the Maryland State's Attorney's Association Legislative Committee Maria spent hundreds of hours in Annapolis advocating for tougher criminal laws and increased victim's rights.

Maria is a member of LifePoint Church in the Finksburg/Reisterstown area.  Maria enjoys spending time with her son, golfing, singing, and she is currently learning to play guitar.

Don't Just Take My Word For It

Catherine Blumberg, Domestic Violence Survivor

"Carroll County needs a judge like Maria who is willing to give individuals a chance when deserved but can also distinguish repeat offenders and sentence them properly. She is the most kind hardworking, knowledgeable and patient woman I know. I know all this from personal experienice. Maria was my Domestic Violence Prosecutor from the State's Attorney's Office when my ex husband was abusing me for years. Maria was always there no matter what. She answered any questions that arose no matter when I would think of them. Being a domestic violence victim, Maria was the person I prayed for [for] years. I wish that I would have had a judge like Maria who understood the situation, but I didn't . They kept letting my abuser out on unsecured bond. This led to more abuse and eventually him violating protective orders and seriously hurting me and my children. Carroll County needs a judge who understands victims and families. One that will judge fairly and be able to look at all aspects of a case. With all this being said I believe Maria Oesterreicher is the candidate for the Circuit Court judge position."

Jessica Darby, Former Co-worker Carroll County State's Attorney's Office

"[As]  a Prosecution Assistant preparing cases for . . . court, Ms. Oesterreicher was one of several prosecutor with whom I worked intently . . . Ms. Oesterreicher was always more than willing to lend her expertise in preparing motions and giving advice on each when when asked.  When anyone had questions Maria was the first attorney that would be sought out for answers, as her knowledge of the law exceeded even the most seasoned attorneys in the office. Ms. Oesterreicher quickly became someone I admired very much on a professional and personal level . . . Ms. Oesterreicher has shown me, and others that she is a strong, independent, fair-minded person; someone who I know would represent the best interests of the citizens of Carroll County."

Brett Pearce, Former Westminster VFD Paramedic

"I have known Ms. Oesterreicher for nearly 17 years . . . As] a [former] Paramedic/Fighter, [I] have had numerous interactions with Maria while she was performing her duties as the Domestic Violence Prosecutor . . . Maria shows true devotion to victim's right and a tenacity to the prosecution of those that were in the wrong. Personally, Maria is one of the most . . . honest, caring individuals I know.  She gains her strength through her family, friends and faith. Some of Maria's main attributes are her persistence, diligence and devotion to getting it right. [Maria] shows compassion and equality to people in her personal and professional life, She carries herself in a genuine form that is guided by facts and not presumptions.  I cannot think of better qualities for a Circuit Court Judge."

Colleen E. Kline, MAFP, Former Violence Intervention Case Manager, Family & Children's Services

"During Ms. Oesterreicher's tenure as a prosecutor . . her reputation was unparalleled for her veracity and character.  . . Her focus, professionalism, and superior knowledge of the law were beyond compare. Ms. Oesterreicher handled each case meticulously and comprehensively. . . Ms. Oesterreicher would avail herself to those in the field for consultation and advising. . . Ms. Oesterreicher's fortitude and the tenacity in which she demonstrates as a lawyer give me no reservation in recommending her for the  judgeship . . in the Carroll County Circuit Court."
